Welcome to our shop, sabi. The name sabi is derived from the 16th century Japanese discipline of wabi-sabi, which combines the notions of wabi (things that are simple or humble) and sabi (things that gain beauty with age). This discipline's philosophy asks us to set aside our judgments and our longing for perfection, to concentrate instead on the beauty of things as they are. Wabi-sabi celebrates all the imperfections and time-worn marks that age, weather and loving use leave behind.
Here at sabi, we hand select everything and only choose items that we love -- things that stand out and catch our eye and somehow move us . . .
All flowers and plant materials are living. Real plants benefit the home environment (indoors and out) and they are finite. And caring for plants reminds us of human relationships -- if we are haphazard with our care, they will struggle to survive; but with the best of loving care, they will thrive and be happy.
"The Japanese ethos thrives on creative ways for doing more with less. Added to this are seasonal fluxes necessitating changes in decor--all of which drive a constant state of dynamic renewal. And the preciousness of fleeting moments brings home the saying, ichi-go ichi-e, meaning 'each meeting only once,' " which celebrates each moment's uniqueness.

Japanese Style
"To us our house was not unsentient matter--it had a heart and soul and eyes to see us with, and approvals and solicitudes and deep sympathies; it was of us, and we were in its confidence, and lived in its grace and in the peace of its benediction. We never came home from an absence that its face did not light up and speak out its eloquent welcome--and we could not enter it unmoved."
